Affiliate Blogging for Profit: Monetizing Your Blog

There are many ways that you can monetize your blog. As an affiliate marketer, you can take advantage of these different programs and use them to make more money with very little effort other than promoting your blog.

The goal here is to do the work one time and get paid over and over. Thus, you are leveraging your time to earn more money.

The best thing about using most of these systems is that once you set it up, you don't have to hassle with it anymore except to make a few tweaks to get more from your ads.

To properly monetize your blog, you need to know a little HTML. Don't let this scare you though; it's really a little more than cut and paste.

Also, once you've added your ads to your blog, make sure you preview your blog in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. About 35 percent of users online now use Firefox, and if your blog is hard to read, these readers will click away.

Finally, read the guidelines for each ad program to see what you can and can't do. You don't want to violate the terms of service and lose that stream of revenue.

Now, here is a list of my favorite ways to monetize your blog:

1. Contextual Ads.
This can include Google Adsense, Yahoo Publisher, Amazon or any other type of ad program that use the content of the site to decide what kind of ads to display. These ads are pay per click, which means that whenever anyone clicks the ad, you get paid.

Remember two things here: placement of your ads, and context. If your blog is displaying ads unrelated to your content, then you need to find out why. It's no good to display these kinds of ads on your blog if they're the wrong ads.

(Wordpress offers a plugin for integrating these types of ads into your site. There are also tons of themes available on the internet that are contextual ad friendly, and you can use these themes instead of the basic themes sites like Blogger and Wordpress offer.)

2. Affilite Program Ads.
These ads are usually non contextual ads, and you can use them to complement your contextual ad program. Also, ads displayed can be pay per lead, pay per click, or pay per sale.

Pay per lead usually means that the person has to successfully sign up for something. Pay per sale means the person has to buy something for you to get a commission.

You can find ad programs that display Clickbank, Ebay, $7 Ebooks, Chitika, and just about any program you can imagine.

If you host your own Wordpress blog, then you can find tons of plugins to help you add both contextual and non contextual ads. Plugins include: Kolimbo, Google Adsense, Chitika, A Links, Ebay, Bidvertiser, and PrestoGifto, which allows you to add Cafe Press ads.

I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones I've tried.

3. Write reviews.
You can write reviews on affiliate program products and services related to your blog.
What's important about writing a good review is that you tell the reader something about the product he/she might not know. Also, it's a good idea to have some experience with the product.
Tell the reader about the results from using the product. It also doesn't hurt to mention anything bad about the product. This makes your review sound more genuine than if you simply write a glowing review.

You don't want to write a product review on a bad product and then have it come back on you.

4. Build an affiliate program.
Scripts like Viral Profit Machine allow you to share some of your revenues with your readers who refer others to your site.

Although you may lose a little upfront in commissions, you'll gain a lot more money on the backend, you'll raise your search engine rankings, and you'll make more money from the referrals.

Again, this is a situation where you'll need to host your own blog, but it's definitely worth it.
If the thought of building your own blog makes you cringe, you have a couple of choices.
First, you can buy web hosting that offers Fantastico. This system will install content management scripts for you like Drupal and Wordpress with the click of a button.

You can also outsource your blog setup. Just go to a site like Elance and post a proposal.
Ultimately, it's better to spend a little money getting the work done than pulling your hair out.
Another solution is to sign up with an account with Blogger and remotely host your blog.
Understand that you'll earn a lot more money from your blog if you host it yourself. By owning your own domain and having paid hosting, visitors will take you more seriously and consider you to be more of a professional.

Learn To Make Money Blogging

There's tons of money to earn in blogging. Is it true? You probably heard of it from other people and read about it all over the internet. But does it really sum up to a reasonable amount? Does monetizing your blog earn you a living? The answer is actually yes. All it takes is patience hard work and some great content for your blog.

There are many ways to earn with your blog, there are direct methods which you earn money directly from your blog. There are many ways of selling advertising space on a blog but some of the different advertising options that bloggers experiment with include:

Contextual Advertising
- Programs like AdSense and YPN (beta) are very popular with bloggers and are probably the most common income stream being used by them today (MSN are developing one too).

Impression Based Ads - Impression based ads pay a small amount for every person who views the advertisement. The amount that they pay varies from program to program (and ad to ad) and is generally a fraction of a cent. There are a variety of ad systems around like this including Fastclick and Tribal Fusion. Impression based ads will not earn you much if you do not have a lot of traffic but can be great if you do.

Other Ads Systems - AdGenta, CrispAds, Clicksor, Intelli Txt, Peak Click, Double Click, Industry Brain, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, AVN, Pheedo, Adknowledge, YesAdvertising, RevenuePilotTextAds, SearchFeed, Target Point, OneMonkey, and TextAds.
The other way to earn from blogging is through indirect methods which you earn money because of your blog, examples are:

Consulting - when you are perceived as an expert on a topic you will find that people naturally come to you for advice - some of them willing to pay for it. Some niches are probably better positioned than others for their bloggers to get into paid consultancy work of course.

Employment Opportunities - bloggers are increasingly being targeted by companies because of their demonstrated abilities in their field of expertise. Companies do have access to blogs with content in the same field. Its one way to showcase your skill and expertise in a certain field.
Business Partnerships - One of the benefits of blogging about a niche topic that interests you is that you will begin to connect with others who have similar interests and expertise. As you interact with them it is amazing to see the opportunities for working together that arise.

These are only example of ways to earn money blogging, there are more ways to mention and would be very helpful for a growing blog which has already started earning and would be taking a step further in earning more.

Finally, and most importantly making money with blogs would rely on providing useful content that shows an understanding of your niche. Use your blog not only to report and relay information but to also show initiative in proposing solutions. Be active in your blogging and take the lead in the conversation rather than just react to it. Expanding your network within your niche, work on being connected with other key players (big and small).

Amazon.com Associate Program

Amazon.com Associate Program

Fancy selling books on your website? If so, the well-known Amazon.com provides an affiliate program that pays you referral fees on books sold. The usually heard complaint about this program is that visitors would usually just note the book on the Amazon site, or bookmark the Amazon site itself, and return at some later time to buy the book. When that happens, the purchase is not registered as having come through your site, so you lose the referral fees on that sale. There's no referral program. Note that it is apparently not easy to earn much from this scheme, and many sites report disappointing performance (as compared to other affiliate programs).

How To Choose An Affiliate Program

How should you choose an affiliate program? My suggestion is not to choose a program according to the payment scheme, but rather according to the kind of people who are likely to visit your website. For example, if you are targeting parents on your site, links to affiliates with educational software, books and the like may generate more revenue than banners that link to web hosting companies. The most important rule of choosing an affiliate program is to know your target audience.

Another point to consider is whether you really want to join every single affiliate program that comes your way. Some studies suggest that sites that make the most money from affiliate programs are affiliates of only a small handful of programs. Furthermore, concentrating your advertisements from one network may allow you to be paid faster. If you advertise for hundreds of different affiliate networks on your site, you may wind up earning only (say) a few dollars per month from each network. If your advertiser's minimum payment amount is higher than what you can earn each month, it may take you a long time before you accrue enough to be paid.

On the other hand, that formula does not necessarily hold true for every site (or every page on your site, for that matter). For example, if your site has a particular theme, and an affiliate network only supports one or two suitable advertisers, you might want to sign up for a few affiliate networks so as to get a greater number of relevant advertisers. After all, advertisements that are relevant to your audience are more likely to be taken up than general advertisements. (What's the point of putting banners from only one affiliate if nobody is going to click them?)
